Advances:

Q. Can a player who owns Printed Word and Patronage claim a rebate by patronizing a personality?

A. No, a player may not claim a rebate with Printed Word by patronizing a leader even if he owns Printed Word and Patronage (9.33).

Q. Can someone choose not to use the Proselytism advance during a certain attack (i.e. as part of a deal)?

A. No, players with Proselytism win all of their attacks if their colored die roll is greater than or equal to their Turn Order (9.53).

Q. Can someone choose not to use the powers of their advances?

A. No, attributes of advances must be used unless the advance specifically states that it is optional (may be used).

Q. When you use Renaissance, does it apply only to that phase, or to the rest of the turn?

A. Once you use Renaissance, your turn order position stays in the post Renaissance position for the rest of the turn.

Q. Can the owner of Renaissance move 5th during a turn that he was hit with Civil War?

A. Yes, if a player owns Renaissance and is the victim of Civil War, the Civil War penalty is enacted first and the player may then have a chance to use Renaissance to trade places.

Q. If I co-exist with another player and then use competition to gain control, may I use Wind/Watermill to force a trade?

A. No, you may not use Wind/Watermill to force a trade if you co-existed with another player and then used competition to gain control. You must take a province "from another player" to use Wind/Watermill, meaning that player must control it with a domination marker first (9.53).

Q. Can a player Wind/Watermill someone with zero cards, trading their card to someone and not receiving one back in return?

A. No, Wind/Watermill is an attempt to trade cards and therefore both players must have at least one card.

Q. If someone has bought all 26 Advances, is the final turn played out fully, including a final card play phase?

A. Yes, if someone has purchased all 26 Advances, the final turn is played out fully, including a Final Card Play Phase (11.1).

Chaos:

Q. How does Chaos affect the order of play?

A. Players in Chaos are assumed to be buying zero expansion tokens and play order is determined in the usual fashion.

Q. Can Alchemists Gold, Civil War, Pirates/Vikings, Rebellion, and War! be played against chaosed nations, even if for no effect?

A. Alchemists Gold, Civil War, and War! could not be played against a chaosed nation since they target a player and the player is no longer in the game. Pirates/Vikings and Rebellion could target the provinces of the chaosed nations since their target is provinces, not players.

Q. Are cards played by chaosed players still applicable the turn that they are played, even though the player has chaosed out?

A. Yes, the played cards are still applicable on the turn that a player chaosed out of the game. Only the unplayed cards are discarded out of play or to the Replay Pile (9.32).

Q. If a chaosed player plays a military advantage card, does the military advantage make it more difficult to attack the chaosed player's provinces that turn?

A. Yes, the military advantage makes the chaosed player's provinces more difficult to attack.

A. Yes, the leader can be patronized. Any patronage claims are paid to the bank.

Q. Can you Cathedral a province of a chaosed player?

A. Yes, you can Cathedral a province owned by a chaosed player.

Q. If the chaosed player had Cathedral before they chaosed out of the game, can you still Cathedral a province of the chaosed player?

Q. What is the score for a chaosed player?

A. The Chaosed player's score shall be the value of their advances less 1000. However, the chaosed player's score and position cannot be higher than any opponent that was still in the game at the time of their reaching the Chaos Square. If their score would be higher than one of these opponent's, the Chaosed player's final score will be the opponent's score minus 10.

Q. Can a chaosed player have the most Domination Markers for a Shortage/Surplus in a commodity and thus create a situation where no card or money needs to be paid out for that Shortage/Surplus roll?

A. Yes, a chaosed player can have the majority of a commodity for Shortage/Surplus results which could negate cards gained or money paid.

Q. Can players pay cash to other players for the play, discard, or non-discard of cards, or performance of other "services"?

A. No, players may not pay cash to other players for the play, discard, or non-discard of cards, or for performance of other "services". Players may plead, protest, and whine, but the actual payment of bribes for services rendered is strictly illegal. That is not to say a player could not be influenced into taking a different course of action in exchange for a promised favor in return. It is strictly illegal to show any card before it is played. without incurring the penalty in the rules. You can promise to play a card a certain way, but you absolutely cannot show the identity of any card you hold before it is played. Such promises are entirely unenforceable and any direct payment for services rendered should be considered the lowest form of cheating. (10)
